Why I’m Pursuing a PhD: My Journey and Inspirations

Deciding to pursue a PhD has been one of the most significant choices of my life, and it wasn’t one I arrived at easily. As an undergraduate, I found myself constantly questioning what path I wanted to take. I was passionate about understanding people, especially in social contexts, and fascinated by the ways psychology, technology, and society intersect. But with so many possibilities ahead of me, I wasn’t sure where I fit in or how I could best contribute.

Looking back, it’s clear that my journey has been shaped by experiences and mentors who helped me find clarity in my interests. During my time at Arizona State University, I studied psychology and was captivated by the theories and applications that explained human behavior in broader social settings. I struggled to choose a direction because, while I was drawn to psychology, I wanted to do something that reached beyond individual understanding—I wanted to explore the implications of psychology on organizational performance and social behavior.

The Shift: Understanding the Intersection of Psychology and Technology

The turning point came when I began working with data analysis and research, seeing firsthand how technology can influence behavior and productivity. My time in research labs and internships revealed how technology could shape our habits and how individuals in workplaces face unique pressures that impact their performance. During this time, my interest in organizational behavior began to solidify as I recognized the importance of studying people within systems, especially in the modern workplace.

This realization led me to pursue a Master’s degree in Management of Technology at New York University, which offered a new perspective. My courses and research experiences brought me closer to understanding how technology can be a powerful tool in promoting productivity and well-being in high-stress environments. I saw the potential for technology not only to drive organizational success but to support mental health, reduce procrastination, and foster healthier work habits.

My Aspirations for the Future

Today, I am driven to pursue a PhD to deepen my understanding of organizational behavior, productivity, and the role of technology in fostering positive work environments. The decision to pursue this path wasn’t immediate, but it’s one that now feels inevitable. I aim to develop evidence-based solutions that bridge the gap between psychology and technology, creating tools and strategies that can support individuals and teams in high-pressure settings.

My long-term goal is to work in both academic and applied settings, contributing research that supports organizations and individuals. I envision designing frameworks and interventions that not only boost productivity but also prioritize mental health and well-being. The field of organizational behavior offers an exciting opportunity to make an impact on a large scale—helping to shape healthier, more efficient workplaces that are better aligned with human needs.

A Journey Fueled by Curiosity

Reflecting on my path, I realize that the initial uncertainty was an essential part of the process. Each step, from undergraduate questions to the inspiration from my professors, has helped me refine my goals. Pursuing a PhD is more than an academic achievement for me; it’s a commitment to understanding people, enhancing organizational environments, and contributing to a field that has the power to create meaningful change.

I’m excited about the journey ahead, driven by a passion for research and a deep belief in the potential of technology to improve the way we live and work. Through this blog, I hope to share insights from my journey, lessons from my research, and reflections on how we can all approach productivity and well-being in healthier, more balanced ways.
